"THE LITTLE OLD LADY WHO WASN'T AFRAID OF ANYTHING"

After reading the story, "The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything", we acted out the story. Hannah was the little old lady. Ask your child which of the following parts he/she did...shoes that go clomp, clomp; pants that go wiggle, wiggle; a shirt that goes shake, shake; a white glove that goes clap, clap; a black hat that goes nod, nod; or an orange, scary pumpkin head that goes Boo!, Boo!.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Thank you parents for an enjoyable Halloween celebration!

SECOND STEP

"Second Step" is a program we use in Pre-K to build your child's social skills and self-esteem by giving her/him tools to solve everyday problems. The "Second Step" lessons teach skills in 3 areas:
1. Empathy Training
Children learn to: identify feelings.
predict how other people feel (by reading faces, body language).
show others they care (by responding to others' feelings).

2. Impulse Control
Children learn to: solve problems.
perform social skills (sharing, taking turns, etc.).

3. Anger Management
Children learn to: calm down.
redirect their feelings in more positive ways.

Following each weekly "Second Step" lesson, we will post a brief summary of the lesson on our blog. Children who learn and use the skills presented in this program are more likely to get along with other and people and do better in school.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS

During the month of December, we will be discussing how different holidays use lights/candles in their celebrations. We welcome parents to come in and share with the class how your family uses lights/candles for a holiday that you celebrate. Please contact us if you are interested in doing this.

PILOT VISIT

Yesterday, Blake's dad (Steve) visited our class to talk about being a pilot. He shared information and pictures about the first airplane and how it has evolved over time. He also discussed the education and training you need in order to become a pilot. Finally, each child was given a "toy" airplane to test their flying skills. Thank you, Pilot Steve!

THE BUSY WEEK AHEAD!

Dear Parents--

Thank you for taking the time to meet with us to discuss your child's Pre-K experience. We hope you found the reports and meetings to be informative.

This week will be a busy one for us here in Pre-K. Following are some reminders about the upcoming events....

Thursday October 30th--Campfire Stories--10:00-10:45
We will leave the Pre-K classroom around 9:50 to head for the woods. The Lower School
librarians will share some stories around the campfire and then we will enjoy a traditional
campfire snack! Please remember that dress code does not need to be followed on this day.
Rather, please dress your child in clothes appropriate for "hiking" into the woods.

Friday October 31st--Halloween Party--10:30-11:30
Children should come dressed in dress code to school and bring their costumes with them.
At 10:15, we will begin changing children into costumes. At 10:30, we will parade through
some of the Lower School and then return to the Pre-K classroom for some Halloween
festivities. Happy Halloween!

COMMUNITY HELPERS' DAY

On Friday November 7th, Pre-K will have our "Community Helpers' Day. On this day, your child should come dressed to school as a community helper of his/her choosing (doctor, vet, dentist, nurse, teacher, librarian, police officer, etc.) You do not need to follow school dress code guidelines on this day. PLEASE DO NOT FEEL THAT YOU NEED TO GO OUT AND PURCHASE A COSTUME FOR THIS EVENT! Use resources and materials you have at home as you and your child put together a costume. For example, an adult-sized white shirt could be worn as a "white jacket" for a vet, doctor, or nurse. Your child is also encouraged to bring tools or items that his/her particular community helper might use to do his/her job. We do request that no toy weapons of any kind be brought to school (i.e. guns if your child comes dressed as a police officer).
Tomorrow, Tuesday October 28th, we will send home a homework assignment (with instructions) for your child to complete and bring in on Community Helpers' Day. Children will have the chance to share their costume and knowledge of their community helper with the class on Community Helpers' Day. We want this to be an enjoyable day for the children and an opportunity for them to share their ideas with their classmates.

ZERO THE HERO DAY--HAPPY 40TH DAY OF SCHOOL!

Today for Zero the Hero day, the children decorated their own oval (zero)-shaped photo frames. Also, everyone was given a donut to take home and eat. Thanks Blake and Karen for a fun activity and a yummy treat to help us celebrate our 40th day of school!

ELECTRICIAN VISIT

Donald's father, Dave Speas, and his colleague, "Mr. Jeff", visited us to share about their job as electricians. They talked about how to be safe around electrical wires and showed the children the types of clothing they wear to keep themselves protected when they are working on the electrical wires. Although a little big, the children really enjoyed trying on the safety equipment. Thanks Mr. Dave and Mr. Jeff!
